This morning while driving to work, listening to the radio, I heard an interview with Suzanne Nelson, the mother of Staff Sgt. Andrew Nelson, the Eagle Scout who was killed in Iraq two summers ago. Participating in the interview was Luke Pladson, an Eagle Scout who was in the same Moorhead Boy Scout troop as Andrew. Luke started to describe Andrew by reciting the Scout Law. Twelve Words that all Scouts strive to live by- Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent. Reciting the Scout Law from memory, the words rolling off his tounge, there is no doubt Luke knows and strives to live the code of conduct Scouts learn early in their time in the Scouts.

One of the big misconceptions is that if you miss Scout sign up night that it is too late to sign up for the year. Another misconception is that if you are in sports, you can’t be involved in Scouts-By the end of September almost 1700 new elementary aged boys and their parents will sign up to particpate in Cub Scouts—- Some parents will wait until the last soccer game is played, or the last field goal is kicked to sign their son up for Scouts-That’s perfectly OK. New Cub Scouts are welcome 12 months a year. Cub Scouting is more than another activity to fill the calendar- It is character development, training in good citizenship, and personal fitness ( both physical and spiritual).

Twelve words to live by—– Scoutings code of conduct– Our Scout Law- Come and join- You’ll be glad to did- It can change your son’s life! Check out www.nlcbsa.org and look at the Mission family slide show.
